iPad running Mac OS 9! Just what I always wanted!

About a week ago, I fired up an old PowerBook 2400 on which OS 9 is installed. (Needed to remove some pictures from a really old digital camera that uses pre-OSX software). It was the first time I'd used OS9 in several years.

Anyway, after getting the photos off the camera, for kicks I fired up a web browser and a few other apps. I was pretty impressed at how speedy some of the things were running, even on PowerBook that is now 14 years old!

I believe that there has to be a "cooling off period" - at least here in the UK - after making a purchase at which point you are entitled by law to return the product. Normally that period is 7-14 days but individual stores may be even more lenient than that.

Whether it is a mistake or not, I'm not sure that Apple can refuse a refund if it is a case of genuine mistake. And didn't Steve Jobs have that button he could press to remotely delete an app from someone's device anyway?

I doubt this rumour very much.

Mark my words, iPhone 5 will look similar to iPhone 4 and will be released later this year. It will carry the A5.

The A4 in the iPhone 4 is still perfectly capable and the phone is still one of the best on the market. The iPad got A5 and a redesign after a single generation because it really needed it, iPhone 4 does not, it was built to last and hold out for a while, possibly to skip/slip an upgrade date. The CDMA version is not long out the door and the white is due soon. The extra wait time will allow GSM/CDMA capability, perhaps even that LTE stuff androids seem to get wet over, in a single SKU. Maybe cheaper prices on NAND allowing higher capacities :).

No surprise that Apple are developing an iphone suitable for T-Mobile and other carriers that use the same spectrum. It is only AT&T's exclusivity that's held them back so long. And it's only that exclusivity that's held them back from offering unsubsidised, unlocked iPhones in their stores. The iPhone will be 4 years old in June. maybe AT&T's stranglehold is coming to an end.

If you want to see an iPhone ecosystem to Apple's liking you need to look at the UK, where O2 only had exclusivity for 2 years. Within months, every major network and most of the minor ones started to offer the iPhone. Now even the chav (that probably translates best as "trailer-trash") supermarket network of choice, Tesco, sells it. Competition keeps the prices lowish, but not as low as the junk android handsets and Apple sells unlocked iPhones at full price for those of us with cheap SIM-only plans.

If Vista can run soley in a virtuallized environment without breaking the EULA, but not be installed on a machine that also is using it in a virtualized way. How does this affect anyone-(Mac or PC)?

If I own a PC and I want to run Vista, why would I want to also run Vista, on the same machine, in a virtual environment?

For Mac users, why would we want to install Vista-(via BootCamp) and then also use it under virtualization?

What situation is there that you would want to run the same OS on the same box, one natively installed and one in virtualization?

Very confused about how this affects anyone?

Well it is an issue on who you want incharge. For example If I am doing some web development I may want to virtualize Vista to insture the page renders correctly in IE 7. Then switch back to my Mac Enviroment. But there are other times say I want to play a windows game I would want Windows to have full control. So I want to run it nativly.

I think Microsoft wants to make sure you are not putting the same copy of windows on different virtual devices so you can have 10 Versions of windows from the same license. (ALthough it is on the same box)

We now have some actual game results now and it seems even worse than the 50% drop seen in the original review.

Instead of 50% of the performance of the 320M, we now have:
26% at a lower resolution in Wow
    34% for Lost planet

Those numbers seem to suggest the ULV SAndy Bridge has even worse graphics performance than the previous generation Nvidia 9400M

Gaming performance. Not graphics performance. Don't confuse the two.

Engadget's review said the Intel IGP made short work of 1080p HD clips, so regarding pushing pixels (that aren't games) the HD 3000 seems on par at doing that as the 320m.

Also, I'd venture to day the HD 3000 graphics drivers are more advanced in OSX than they are in Windows.

The same mysterious drop in Gaming performance was seen in Windows vs. OSX in the Anandtech review of the 13" 2011 MBP (http://www.anandtech.com/show/4205/the-macbook-pro-review-13-and-15-inch-2011-brings-sandy-bridge/7):

"Under OS X, the new HD Graphics 3000 GPU is actually about the same performance or even faster than the 2010 13-inch's GeForce 320M. Remember that Apple does a lot of its own driver writing under OS X and the SNB GPU received some TLC from Apple in the form of very well optimized drivers."

And yes, I know the MBP uses a fully clocked IGP and the MBA probably won't.

But if even a fully clocked IGP sucks in Windows and works almost on par with the 320m in OSX, then I'd like to at least see the LV HD3000 benchmarks in OSX before making a final judgement.

it is only 29min. Not sure where you get almost 1 hour from. And it was measured in Windows, so I think this is the most comparable number. Mac OS is known to be better at using less power than Windows. From this, I'd say there would be a marginal increase in battery life by switching to Sandy Bridge - nothing major.

Hah. My bad. I was adding like adding, and not like time adding.

I'd take even a marginal increase in battery life, though, who wouldn't?

And I'd also venture to say that Apple's doing better at battery life than most other manufacturers. The 13" 2011 MBP added 10W to it's TDP and (like you say below) Sandy Bridge seems like it's sneaky with it's turbo boosting - and still the 2011 MBP gets better battery life than it's C2D+320m sibling from last year.

TDP is not the whole story .. for example the 2011 i7 2.3Ghz Sandy Bridge Quad Core is supposed to have a TDP of 45W, which is 10W more than the i7
2.66Ghz 2010 model. However, Anandtech measured the 2011 machine using almost 40W more running a CPU intensive task. Something is very weird about the Sandy Bridge TDP numbers.

Hmm, interesting, I hadn't seen that comparison yet (http://www.anandtech.com/show/4205/the-macbook-pro-review-13-and-15-inch-2011-brings-sandy-bridge/14).

The GPU must come into play in both those test, however... so 45W + 25W = 70W out of the 93W used are accounted for in TDP.

And the 13" MBP pulls 48W instead of it's 35W TDP. It's interesting.

I wish we had seen comparable numbers for the current MBA. Does it pull more than advertised under load? How much? If not, why not? Is turbo boost to blame?

My point was based purely on TDP and not high-end scenarios, the battery life should be longer. Wireless web surfing is how Apple measures it now - and I couldn't see the SL9400/9600+320m combo posting better battery numbers in a wireless web test than the i5/HD3000 combo? That leads me to say unless one was doing high-end Rendering with their MBA - the general web-surfing, itunes playing, facebook-checking Mac user will not see anymore than the ~20W TDP come into play, giving that user longer battery life, no?

The best way to avoid unintentional purchases is to use the Shopping Cart. That way, you can consolidate and review your selections carefully and buy them when you're ready.
For the record, Apple removed the Shopping Cart feature when iTunes 9 (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/09/09/apple-releases-itunes-9-new-media-syncing-options-genius-mixes-iphone-app-organization/) came out last September. You have to use the less convenient Wish List (http://www.apple.com/itunes/how-to/index.html#store-wishlist) feature now.

Those who bought their Computer in August should be happy with what they got since that was what was the best available at the time. And what are you talking about not in the forecast? The previous revision was here for just over 6 months. From April 2006 to October 2006. How long do you want Apple to go with out updates?

The processor upgrades, not the OS upgrades.

I think this is great news~ I mean, really a few things would happen:

Zune sucks, doesn't do well (good for Apple)
Zune is well designed, but Apple makes an even better iPod (good for us)
Zune is really really well-designed, better than the iPod. (good for me, I'll get a Zune over an iPod)

I do not agree that lower our demands for Apple with regards to security expectations. Now is Apple's chance to prevent getting an image that their competition has, with regards to holes in security. Apple themselves have advertised that Spyware, viruses, etc, are not part of the OS X experience (http://movies.apple.com/movies/us/apple/getamac_ads1/viruses_480x376.mov). In my opinion, that may be received as a challenge, or incentive for someone to make that argument a fallacy.

Perhaps you missed me saying "Now, certainly, these issues should be looked at with all due diligence"? Again, I agree that Apple needs to keep on top of these vulnerabilities. With a little luck, we'll see a new security update within the next week or two that will patch most, if not all, of these. My objection was not to wanting Apple to fix these vulnerabilities. My objection was to the tone that suggested that if we didn't mount a public outcry, Apple would ignore these altogether, and by January 1st there'd be as many viruses on OS X as on Windows. It's the alarmist nature of so many of the posts here that I found objectionable. Give Apple the credit it's due, and trust that they are working on patching all of these vulnerabilities right now. How hard it is to patch them will determine how long we'll have to wait for the security updates.

I'm still waiting to hear that someone--anyone--has actually been exploited by one of these "exploits."

Yes, actually they're vulnerabilities, not exploits. There's a big difference. Determining a way to utilize a vulnerability as an exploit is no small challenge. And I'm with you. While I'm eager to see Apple plug these holes, I'm not worrying about the boat sinking until I see some water start to come in... ;)

I'm going to speculate here. Lion is the eighth release of OS X. Perhaps the ninth release will support touchscreens and iOS apps.

I envision something like the Macbook Air with a touchscreen and reversible hinge (like the early 2000s Windows tablets, but a much cleaner design) that could run OS X and iOS apps. The Air is already not much bigger than an iPad.

Now, if Apple is internally working on something like this, and wanted to test existing apps from the store, then the alpha OS would need to be supported in the store. Of course, Apple probably intended to hide the string that IDs the compatibility, but sometimes mistakes happen.

Or, of course, the whole thing could be an accident/bug and it means nothing at all.

could be a touch panel iMac...

So Apple does in fact have a patent or patent application for a hinged iMac that can transition from an upright position to a near-flat angled position for touch-based operation. Several have also done notebook computers with a swivel hinge or a flip screen to make it double as a tablet.
